fifth interval gather together some of the most forward thinking minds in the dub techno sphere for this various artists ep. those already acquainted with the label will be familiar with the likes of federsen and tomas rubeck, who headed up the first and second releases respectively. they are joined by dub techno luminary brendon moller, aka beat pharmacy and alessandro crimi, for this four tracker of perfectly contrasting arrangements. federsen opens the proceedings with the sunset sequence of bay blues, cascading keys rolling through the gaps in a subtly broken drum arrangement, making for effortless and captivating listening. beat pharmacy contributes his first original material to the label after a brace of remixes last year. showing true mastery of the board, chromed chord stabs are pushed and pulled around the mix in true dubwise style, drifting over a malleable bassline that packs a serious punch. on the flip side, tomas rubeck crafts a tightly woven backdrop of constantly evolving, organic atmospherics and powerful drum work for io, and this muscular workout is perfectly contrasted by the swung grooves and kaleidoscopic synthesis of alessandro crimis fractal clouds, which closes the ep.

early pioneers of the german new wave music scene, din a testbild were formed in 1978 by mark eins and gudrun gut (former member of einstürzende neubauten, mania d. and malaria!). din a testbild played a significant role in defining the avant-garde music of berlin. legendary is their partecipation at the festival genialer dilletanten- in 1981. programm 4 is their fourth album. mixed and auto-produced by mark eins near the wall in west/berlin in 1983, the album was rejected at the time by innovative communication, considered too much synth/punk/techno, while the new label managers were looking more into new age stuff. in fact schulze eventually sold the label in 1983, which started to release a plethora of acts loosely grouped around the nam genre.

inspired by selfish showmanship of social networks argomat and jen from hannover packed their very own view of things into this release. long live the selfie-stick...not. the b-side is just about misunderstanding. all in all...don t take this release too serious. there is a beat, a bassline, some things around that and essentially again, the really nice voice of jen. with mikel gil (lonely owl records) from spain and label owner gunman we have two fantastic remixes and both are delivering their own perception of music. enjoy :)

too many possibilities can also mean a tyranny of the what if.... in this light, celebrating less becomes vital. and thats exactly what swedish producer and studio barnhus affiliate simon haydo does in redux. all of the sounds in the albums nine tracks come from just one synth: the korg ms20. as simon puts it, the idea was to maximize the use of less, basically. less gear, less effects, less input from other people , less everything.using only between 2 and 6 channels for every track, the result is a stripped but surprisingly rich sound, that delineates spatial techno vignettes coated with the unmistakable charac- ter of the ms20 filters. even more interestingly, this restraint is not only applied gear-wise, but also from an emotional point of view. instead of involving my own feelings, i let the voice of the ms20 take care of it, says simon. all this makes redux an expression of techno in its purest form. after all, its a kind of music that has always gravitated around simplicity, austerity and, of course, the believe that the machines have their own soul.

already heavy hitters on the house music scene since their first releases back in 2012, waze & odyssey continue to carve out club burners with such ease, and their first release of 2017 finds a suitably fitting home on edible. the duo of firas waez and serge santiago have seemingly not put one step wrong in their ascendency within the house music circuit. be it releases for labels like wolf music, elrow or their own w&o street tracks, or remixes for the likes of disclosure, totally enormous extinct dinosaur and metronomy, w&o have found that knack of delivering sure fire winners time after time. already a staple in label boss eats everything�s dj sets, �down with tha� has all the hallmarks of a bona fide club classic, if the hyperactive drums and looping vocal refrain doesn�t draw you in enough, then the downright funky bass lick that prominently packs a punch really provides the killer hook. the, quite frankly, face melting breakdown surely seals the deal, and we are anticipating this cut to ring out loud across dancefloors over the coming weeks and months. competently propping up the release, �seizure� goes on a spacey, bongo odyssey (geddit?), serving up a rolling, dubby drum workout that culminates in a rather impressive snare roll breakdown that�ll have you frothing at the mouth. snatches of female vox and whistles are dotted around the galloping jungle drums, whilst the elevating key chimes provide the perfect musical lift. another slice of completely freshhouse music from w&o!

it really feels like we (aka mad mats & tooli) have been around way longer than 5 1/2 years with local talk, but it s really true what they say, time flies when you re having fun! from what started as a somewhat simple and almost primitive urge to create a small house imprint has now grown into a much bigger affair. we really tried hard to keep the label from getting stuck in any genre (remember 90s house?) and to always keep the local talk relevant, curious, diverse and with a healthy dose of underground mentality. from our very first release with bassfort s excellent moon shadow in the summer of 2011, we had a crystal clear vision of what local talk should represent... house music in any way, shape or form! over the years we released soulful, disco, jack, afro, vocal, deep, jazz, tech, latin, old school, acid, uk, berlin, new jersey, detroit and of course chicago inspired house music. if it made us bump...we put it out! this brings us up to today and about +80 releases later. we thought about how we best could sum up these first 5 1/2 years and immediately the image of blaze s classic album 25 years later popped up. besides the fact that it s an amazing album cover it also a good representation when different musical genres fuse together. it s not strictly a house album but just as well a r&b, reggae and soul album. this fusion and variation of house sounds is something that we ve tried to capture on our 5 1/2 years later compilation, split into two parts. on part 1 you ll find a dark bassline driven house jam from art of tones (check the mad sax!), a proper deep journey jam from nyc s dj spinna, a blaze homage with that classic new jersey sound from sean mccabe, and a bumpy world/jazz inspired cut straight outta brescia from wonder kid corrado bucci. all in all we think we got most angles covered and hopefully this album will make you spread that chalk on the dance floor and get down...local talk style!

five years deep into the game, all nine lives fully intact: utrechtian feral feline larry de kat prowls his way onto pets. and we really dont need to tell you how purrrrfectly apt this debut union is. fresh from launching his own katnip imprint (and putting the final touches on a hush-hush disco edit series), pets have managed to prise four of his finest, broadest creations from his creative claws. each one floorbound, each one backing up the hype hes enjoyed from the likes of axel boman, mark e and laurent garnier, each one making us feel like cats who got the creamiest of creams. i know you can hear me� takes the lead on a more direct tip that you might expect from de kat. big pumps wrapped in a fine vibe balance of detroit and parisian house textures, but done with larrys signature dubby, jacking style, its the perfect paws-sitive statement of intent. slinking deeper into the ep, naakte groove lives up to its nude name with a lean-but-warm bass riff that purrs with finesse around a straight-up strutting drum arrangement. so much fun in such a tight, detailed groove, youll want this on loop forever.amlou stalks up behind with dusty, thumping charm. rolling and scratching like it was 20 years younger, theres an innate physicality in the drums that snaps you out when the big disco hook rides in from nowhere. finally we hit she doesnt. the dubbiest groove of the set, all eyes are on that bulbous sub, rippling synths and precision tuned snare shot. hypnotic, heavy, unhurried and heads down. these sounds are fur real. like all the best stray cats, expect larry to return to pets as and when he pleases.

dubfire and miss kittin have scored another big hit in the form of their second collaboration ride, the follow-up to the much-loved anthem exit. now, many destroyed dancefloors later and they�re unleashing a big pack of remixes to sit alongside their two original versions. solomun may best known for big melodies and hooks, but his remix boldly displays his affinity for heads down techno. a beast of a track, it centers around ticking percussion and pulsating synth delays with a throbbing low end. minimal in approach, maximal in aesthetic, it�s a no-nonsense groove. matthew dear dons his audion guise to remind us how instrumental he was in formulating that oddball techno sound a decade ago, making good use of the vocals in the heady breakdowns and matching them with unsettlingly wavering synth sirens and an almost tribal bass stomp. it�s full of atmospheric touches and pulls off a big room feel without resorting to cliches. depeche mode, erasure and yazoo legend vince clarke is a personal hero of dubfire�s, making his appearance on this package all the more of a special, rare treat. his chunky house groove is decked out with rolling congas, electro arpeggios and a yearning, bluesy guitar lick. french star djedjotronic has himself remixed depeche mode, and his version rounds off the package with throbbing low end, harrowing synths, techy percussion and brooding reese bass swells. with four very different mixes to choose from, this is an immense package that is set to cause havoc on dancefloors worldwide for some time to come.

chicago dj and producer olin follows up the debut release on his new record label, boundary movement, with tpi featuring four diverse cuts. up-tempo electro, moody minimalism, old-school melodies, and chugging deep house all woven seamlessly. the a side begins with �tpi,� an exercise in minimalism and micro-detail. unmistakably olin�s own, insistent synth stabs keep time while needlepoint percussion keeps the ear guessing. if you thought olin�s palette was limited to techno and house, a2 �corsaren� will prove you wrong � this is pitch-perfect electro in a classic style, a slow-building interplay of sci-fi synthesizers wrapped around icy cool call-and-response kicks and handclaps. b1 �thanks rob� is bom02�s most straightforward cut � and one of its best. building momentum slowly across its eight-minute runtime, �thanks rob� impresses as the larger-than-life bass swell hits. the dancefloor will be rapt � proceed carefully. b2 �hyssop,� feeling like it comes from a similar vintage as �corsaren,� might have been called �ambient techno� decades ago, but its upwardly mobile percussion makes it feel as at home in a club as it does in the chill-out room. it�s just the thing to close out this broad-spectrum record. � chris zaldua

hotflush welcome lara wehbie aka blursome to the ranks with her debut ep �rendition of you�. raised in north carolina and currently residing in brooklyn, wehbie has come a long way since beginning to work on music in 2011 as a way of channeling her diagnosed depression and anxiety. she describes her work as a transitional darkness, something she says defined her sound even before she could manage the software she uses to make it. in her own words, �rendition of you ep signifies major transitions in my life over the past year and how my environment truly played a role in handling situations. it s a testament to how much happier i am now than i used to be. i still struggle but i m truly thankful for the influences i have around me that have made me a better individual and artist.� along the way she has attended the red bull music academy bass camp in 2015, and after an appearance on scuba s 2016 fabric mix, she debuts on the label with an experimental six track ep. side a of -rendition of you- introduces listeners to her experimental use of vocals and heavy percussive influences from the left field genre. side b dives straight into dance floor material with pounding kicks and and interjecting vocals, but then slowly winds down into a more melancholic ending with piercing synths rattling through to the last drop.

there�s not a lot to tell about the project glow in the dark by a certain harry miller. only perhaps we can state that with these eight tracks at hand harry miller accomplished probably the most enchanting album of the still quite young year. just when we wanted to dismiss the short-dated genre of chillwave wistfully, �future bliss� comes along with a bewitching sound hailing from an optimistic but cranky future. already the opening track �step one� with its vocal samples and its spoken word intro is futuristic soul full of affirmation of life pillowed on a synth bedding smoothed to the max up to its edges. but also the following seven tracks spread infectious positive vibes all around. the magic of glow in the dark�s tracks is energized mostly by miller�s delicate way of treating his various samples, a wary manner one usually only shows when picking up a guitar. and unlike sample based music feeding from hiphop his tracks are completely free from any sort of nostalgia, because all of his songs are designed for the future through and through. �future bliss� is one hell of a joy ride, from the first note to the last tone. the neon funk of �1987�, the broken beat of �7 billion = 1�, the synth pop of �the last dance� and in general, all of the eight tracks could be little, but great hymns on their own. but only in its entirety they sparkle this fathomless ingeniousness hidden in glow in the dark. in the end it seems to be wiser that one has as little background information as possible to be able to lose oneself fully in this �future bliss�.

henrik schwarz first work for running back and concurrent solo piece since 2013 is a prime example of the mans uncanny production abilities. recent years saw schwarz more and more gravitating towards the intersections between electronic music and jazz, classical compositions or african sounds than serving the weekly bread and butter at clublands busy buffet car. now, not also you is a return to exactly that honourable craft and service. built around an imagined and imaginary curtain lecture from a saint to a sinner and housed in one of henriks most techno looking robes as of yet, its a no-brainer or shall we dare say a reaper of a track without frills but with a fata morgana like rave signal. oh, there is a dub for snobs (not you also), too. peak time, high time, any time. nice sleeve on top.
